It used to be the case that companies would create centers of excellence in one place and invest heavily in them as large hubs of production or distribution, with a range of other less developed centers around the world. This approach is clearly not very efficient or agile in today’s environment. But the availability of performance and maintenance data now means that you can collect information from a network of decentralized hubs and share it with the whole ecosystem – every part of the network can become a center of excellence. You can then obtain economies of scale.
