There is no “right” way to read or use it, but we humbly suggest that you follow one of the two following paths: 1. From start to finish : Read each of the sections and chapters in the order we have presented them in and work through each step and task carefully, either on your own or with selected members of your family, to create a holistic vision of your custom-made family office. This route is especially targeted at those families who are considering setting up a family office or formalizing an informal and ad hoc “family office” service that is currently embedded in the family enterprise ecosystem. 2. Go modular : We have written each section and chapter to make it possible for you to dive into areas that are more relevant for you without missing out on essential knowledge elsewhere. This means that if you have already established the purpose of your family office or have an existing family office, but want to fine-tune your structure or organization, you can do so by going straight to the relevant parts of the Navigator . One practical way to utilize the Family Office Navigator is to download the navigator framework from our dedicated book page on www.imd.org/fon . Print it out in A2 or A1 and start co-creating your family office with your family. You could utilize post-it notes to stay flexible and turn this discussion into a proper workshop.
